According to Jewish tradition, there are seven agricultural products that God bestowed on Israel after the exile in Egypt. These are special products that the Jewish regard as Blessings from God. These are the same products listed in the Old Testament in Deuteronomy 8:8.. The original Jewish translation of this text refers to the last word in the scripture as: Ta.mar which accurately translated is : a honey date or date palm. Jews have used dates in all of their festivals since the time of the Great Exodus and Moses.
For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land–a land with streams and pools of water, with springs flowing in the valleys and hills; Land of wheat, barley, vines, fig, pomegranates, olive oil and honey…— Deuteronomy 8:7&8.
According to an article found on Jerusalem Prayer team.org “Prof. Michael Aviram from the Techniyon in Haifa (the Israeli equivalent of MIT), show surprising health benefits resulting from consuming a few dates a day. The research showed a decrease of 8% in cholesterol levels after four weeks of date consumption and a significant improvement in other blood tests: 200 grams of dates a day reduced by 33% the levels of oxidative stress in the blood. A Norwegian research has found that dates have four times higher the level of antioxidants than those found in bananas and eight times higher the levels than those in apples. Surprisingly, this special high-fiber super food, despite being very sweet, did not increase the levels of blood sugar, nor did it cause weight gain.”
The modern Daniel Fast takes the translation of Honey as the sweetener. That is how I did the fast as well. So no, sweeteners at all : sugars, agave, maple or honey etc. I knew as a pastry chef, I would need a sweet snack. Call it a Date ball, energy ball, bliss ball: whatever the name it’s all basically the same – pureed dates with lots of plant based yummy goodness. Best thing of all its satisfies that sweet craving with NO SUGAR. It is no wonder Israel celebrated God’s blessing of honey date.
The basic recipe was given to me by a friend many years ago with some tweaks I made it my own.
- 2 cups pitted dates
- 1 cup shredded coconut
- 1/2 cup finely ground oats
- 1 tbs finely ground flax
- 1/2 cup finely ground wheat bran
- 1/8 cup natural peanut butter
- 1/2 tsp sea salt
- paste of 1 vanilla bean
- mixture of coconut, chopped nuts, hemp hearts, cocoa, chia etc.
- ** omit cocoa -if fasting
Method 1: If you do not have food processor: make puree dates on stove top by placing dates in large pot and covering them with water. simmer and stir often until they become soft and form a puree. let cool fully before combining with remaining ingredients. Use a 1 inch cookie scoop to evenly portion the date mixture. With damp hands roll and place into desired coating. ( I enjoy mix of chia and coconut) store in air tight container in fridge or a week or so or freezer for approx 2 months. Not that they will last that long.
